Later the island became one of the most important leper colonies of Greece and served as inspiration for the bestseller "The Island" by V. Hislop. It is accessible every day by small ferries from Elounda, Plaka or Agios Nikolaos.

Chryssi Island

Chryssi: A unique, almost unspoiled island, 8 km south of Ierapetra, with turquoise water, which owes its name to the golden color of its sandy beaches. Characteristic of Chryssi are the numerous mussels. From May to October from the port of Ierapetra ferry crossings are offered on a daily basis
